First Trout

Reading this article reminded me of when I gave my Dad his first set of fly fishing tackle. I know that sounds like the “wrong way ’round”, but you read it right. Dad was almost 70 at the time.

I hadn’t really known Dad as a fisherman - much less a fly fisherman - as I grew up, but after retirement he had a small vacation place in the mountains, and I couldn’t think of a more relaxing activity for someone with so much new-found time on his hands.

It was Christmas Day and all the “boys” were there with their families, but Dad and I spent the whole afternoon dry-casting in the back yard. It was like an immediate transformation - he didn’t even need a stream!
