Dick Cheney Fishing the Big Horn

I read in the Casper (WY) Star Tribune that Vice President Dick Cheney is spending his vacation fly fishing in southeastern Montana on the Big Horn River. I wonder if he’s got his new $3,000-plus rod on the trip with him.

How’s this for a fishing trip?

First you get rod builder Howard Schelske from Stayton, Oregon to create a beautiful, 9-foot hand-split Chinese bamboo rod with silk wrappings and brass and agate guides. Nothing but the best materials. The reel seat is of cross-grained walnut. There are Cape buffalo horn highlights, and every nickel-silver surface is ornately engraved by an Italian master. Do you actually fish with something like that? or just hang it on a wall?

Anyway, then you send the Secret Service in to float the river a couple of days ahead of time. (I don’t think he actually “sends” them. It’s just standard protocol for them to anticipate his movements and be prepared for what they will find once he shows up.) Supposedly, they even picked up a few trout flies for him in the local fly shop.

Of course, there’s some uncertainty about how long the vice president will be in Montana. I’m not sure if that’s for security purposes or if it just depends on how good the catch is.
