Salmon River Fishing
The Salmon River in Upstate New York is a world-class destination for fly fishers. This is obviously no secret. Last year’s creel census recorded that 2/3 of those that fish the Salmon River carry non-resident licenses.
The N.Y. Department of Environmental Conservation reported over 85,000 Chinook Salmon taken from the Salmon River in a 50 day period between September and November of last year. On top of that number, anglers landed another 2,600 Coho and Atlantic Salmon, almost 7,000 Steelhead, and over 3,300 Brown Trout during that same period.
This year the DEC stocked the river with about 1100 8-9 inch Rainbow Trout, and a like number of Brook Trout of the same size. With good weather, this fall’s season should easily be as good as last year.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has a lot of fresh water fishing information on their web site - including maps, tips, fishing regulations and license requirements.
